Here is what it means
Hardness is measured in “grains per gallon.” Lower is gentler on your home, higher is harder. Here’s the plain-language version of the scale:
Soft to slightly hard
The sweet spot. Soap rinses clean, no scale, appliances live a long life. Rare here without treatment.
Moderately hard
You start to notice spots and a little film. Manageable, but it adds up over the years.
Hard
Scale on faucets, crusty showerheads, more soap and detergent just to get things clean.
Very hard
Where most of our towns land. The daily grind of spots, film, dry skin, and appliances wearing out early.
The costs of living with hard water
